A Wired Microphone Cleaning Guide

Mic Check, One, Two… Gross?
While our cars gleam and our succulents bask in the glow of a well-timed misting, how often do we truly give our trusty microphones the cleaning they deserve? Yeah, I’m just as guilty as anyone!
This guide focuses on wired mics with removable grilles, like the beloved Shure SM58®, Beta® 58A, and KSM8. For all other mics, including wireless wonders, consult your manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Make sure all instruments are unplugged before we perform any maintenance.
The Shure Way to Sparkle
Isopropyl alcohol – the superhero of mic cleaning. It effectively kills germs without harming performance. But can be harmful to paint. Alcohol might cause fading, so test it on a hidden spot first.
Avoid bleach and hydrogen peroxide.
Here’s the lowdown on Shure’s cleaning routine:
  1. Capsule: Remove the grill and put the capsule somewhere away and safe.
  2. At least 24 hours: After cleaning, let the grill, foam, and any other washable parts air dry for at least 24 hours before putting them back together.
  3. Wash: Warm water and hand soap are your allies. Give the foam a gentle bath, rinse thoroughly, and let it dry completely.
  4. Grill: Treat the grill to a warm soapy bath. A soft toothbrush and some alcohol will tackle stubborn grime. Air dry.
  5. Wipe: This is a golden rule. Give your handheld mics a quick disinfection with a Clorox® Disinfecting Wipe or Lysol® Disinfectant Spray after each use. Keep those germs at bay!

Remember:
  • These are general instructions, so always consult your mic’s manual for specific details.
  • Wash your hands often – dirty digits transfer their own grimy entourage.
  • Hand sanitizer is off-limits for instruments. Stick to the trusted alcohol or wipes.
By following these simple steps, you can transform your dusty dingers into crystal-clear vocal machines. So go forth, clean with confidence, and let your voice be heard, loud and proud!
