Available wifi platforms
The requirements for the signal availability and strength are mainly set by the client’s needs. But you can classify them into two different categories:
  • Low band- Depending on availability, general low band internet usage can usually get accomplished by available local wifi (Starbucks) and personal hot spots and jet packs.
  • Broadband/high speed– However anything that needs more speed like Zoom and fast upload and download of video files will require more elaborate planning. Other options include Starlink, satellite uplink, or dedicated fiber line from the local cable company (which can take up to 10 days to setup).

A noteworthy factor to consider when choosing between services is what we call the “live” or the instantaneous factor of the application. For example, Zoom is considered a “live” app because it is delivering the signal in real time and not buffered. (I will explain below why this is especially important when choosing Starlink.) On the other hand, Youtube, social media, email and platforms alike are considered buffered, which basically means they won’t get interrupted in case of a momentary loss of signal or slowing down.

.

  • Starlink: This is purely my experience with Starlink and my limited technical knowledge.
In a nutshell, Starlink needs to reposition itself every hour or so. And during that 10-30 seconds, the “live” signal will be lost but buffered signals will not be affected. This momentary loss is UNACCEPTABLE when we are recording and Zoom is live.
Starlink can be a good choice for base camps and video villages for all email and text needs.
