The Secret Weapon of Every Set Warrior: Amenities!

Audience warm up:

– Have you have ever been on a production set? [mild chuckle from the audio engineers

– Have you have ever been in those moments when hour six rolls around, and you find yourself perched on the “engineer’s HOT throne” with nowhere to go? [Laughter from the audio engineers

– Have you ever had the director AKA “Richard the Yeller” barking orders at you from behind the headsets, while “Jesus” himself graces the set with his presence… [Audience cracks up]

OK, back to reality … In those moments, folks, a sip of water, a decent sandwich, or even just a quick bathroom break can feel like the gates of heaven. (sorry for the drama. It’s for the theatrical effect!).
We’ve all been there – slogging through long, stressful days on dry, no craft services sets with bathrooms that wouldn’t win any awards.

The entertainment industry throws some unique curveballs at our schedules. Standard working hours and breaks? Not always a thing. That’s why, whether you’re a seasoned foreman or a freelance warrior, planning for the unexpected is key, especially when it comes to finding the essentials: water, restrooms, and that glorious haven known as craft services.

Here’s your survival guide:

  • Hydration Hero: Pack your trunk with Costco water by the case. Trust us, your future self will thank you and you might make some friends along the way!
  • Snack Attack: Stash some non-perishable snacks in your bag. Think granola bars, trail mix, or anything that won’t melt in the summer heat.
  • Scouting for Survival: During your pre-production scout, keep an eye out for amenities. Knowing where the nearest bathroom, water fountain, hospital and Starbucks are, can be a lifesaver.
  • Ask Away: Don’t be shy about inquiring about craft services and lunch areas. They are for you!
  • Crew Love: Be courteous to the amazing folks in craft services and the meal crew. They’re the gatekeepers of the freshest coffee (and maybe even some gossip!).
  • One more: It’s a good idea to ask your crew’s dietary restrictions beforehand and accommodate if possible. It might just go a long way!

Remember, a happy crew is a productive crew. So, take care of yourself, utilize those amenities, and conquer those long days like the set warrior you are!
